But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.
John 4:23 NRSV
To worship God in spirit and truth may be as straightforward as being fully present and humble.
Fully present is the beginning. For we have been places in body that our spirit has not gone with us. Preoccupied, distracted, and even boredom can prevent us from being fully present in a situation. That includes worship. Have you ever been to a worship service but your mind was miles away? Yeah, me too.
Truth may not only be about rightness but also honesty. Honest about our needs, our desires, and our current situation. Honesty and humility go hand in hand. Humility is the posture where honesty about our lives takes root. Humility is also being willing for God to point out who we really are in good and difficult ways. Humility is an openness to hearing and acting upon God’s direction. A willingness to not be in control, then, may be the key to truly worshiping.
Here we see that worship is not that which I do, but that which is done in me.
Ancient-Future Worship by Robert E. Webber and John Wilvliet
True worshipers bring their entire selves before God and are prepared to hear from God and be changed.
I pray that may be us.
This one was esy for me since I “lead” Thursday morning prayer Zoom, and this is the verse I read EVERY Thursday!!! Sandy
