“7 The LORD said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. 8 So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey-”
A crying baby gets our attention. What is wrong we ask? Hungry? Wet or dirty? Need a hug? Belly-ache? Or cranky just because…I kinda know what that is like sometimes! My point is that the cry gets our attention and demands we choose a course of action even if that is to do nothing. The Scripture is full of voices crying out. At each turn God hears and responds. By listening to these voices and watching for God’s response we begin to get a clearer picture of God and ourselves.
2018 is a year of listening that continues this Lenten season as we listen to those who cry out in Scripture these 40 days of preparation for Easter. This devotional guide is meant to supplement and expand upon the weekly sermons. We suggest you use it on Tuesdays and Thursdays as a way to tie together the week and have time to reflect upon each. In addition, we encourage you to fast on Fridays from sunrise to sunset. You may want to fast from food or TV or FaceBook. Use the time you would normally spend on those activities in an intentional time of listening through prayer and Scripture reading.
