Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.

Isaiah 7:14 NRSV

The sign given by God is as old as the human race. A child being born is the foundation of how humanity continues…literally!

And yet, it is as if God is saying, “look up” and don’t miss this. Something that happens day in and day out will be what I use to bring about my sign. In the ordinary [if childbirth could ever be called that] I will do something extraordinary.

What if we are watching and waiting in the wrong place? What if we are looking for the out of the ordinary when God is using the ordinary, even mundane or boring, to reach out to us?

God with us, Immanuel, means that God joins us in our everyday walking around lives. That means that all of life is now full of potential. If we will begin looking for the signs of God’s presence, I am fully convinced we will find God at work.
