Advent Devotional: Wednesday, December 5

Scripture: Psalm 16:8-11 NLT
8 I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.
My body rests in safety.
10 For you will not leave my soul among the dead
or allow your holy one to rot in the grave.
11 You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Devotional Thought:
I have reached the point of no return. Actually, I’ve reached the point where I must return. If I leave my glasses at the house, I have no choice but to return or be resigned to blurriness because my arms have shortened over the years! But as soon as I put on the glasses everything changes. I can see the phone and read the paper (and Bible of course!) and do all sorts of things that before the age of 45 I took for granted.

The presence of the Lord brings joy. Wherever God is you can be assured joy will be present. And since God is everywhere…well, you get the point! Our perception is what often prevents us from experiencing the gift of joy. I’m not talking about a “making lemonade from lemons” type of outlook but something more permanent. A set of lenses that sees God at work in every situation.
But we often don’t experience joy not because God is absent but because our viewpoint is skewed by complacency or fear or anxiety or sin or all the above as well as many other things. We fail to see God’s presence because we are too shortsighted to see beyond our circumstances in life.

Lord Jesus, give me the viewpoint to see you in the midst of my ups and downs as well as my everyday life. Remove from me the glasses that cloud your presence.
