Mighty works that don’t work

“Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.”  Matthew 11.20 NLT

Isn’t it fascinating that Jesus did “mighty works” in places and the response was a great big “so what!”?  I believe the answer to why is contained in one of the first interactions Jesus had with his soon to be disciples in Matthew 4 when he told Peter, Andrew, James and John to follow me.  He didn’t ask them to “believe in me” or “give your heart to me” but rather “follow me.”  In so doing Jesus asks them to completely and totally change the trajectory of their life.  And that’s the rub.  While many may desire what Jesus can do for them, few are willing to respond with anything outside of their comfort zone.
