There are times when I read Scripture and it just screams out at me, humbles me, really gives me a new perspective. This morning for devotional I read Ezekiel 33:30-33 which says,
30 “Son of man, your people talk about you in their houses and whisper about you at the doors. They say to each other, ‘Come on, let’s go hear the prophet tell us what the Lord is saying!’ 31 So my people come pretending to be sincere and sit before you. They listen to your words, but they have no intention of doing what you say. Their mouths are full of lustful words, and their hearts seek only after money. 32 You are very entertaining to them, like someone who sings love songs with a beautiful voice or plays fine music on an instrument. They hear what you say, but they don’t act on it!
Now, before you take this as some slap in the face about people not listening to me, that is not at all what I am trying to say. It was a great reminder that my job is not to be entertaining or clever or anything else that draws attention to me and away from God’s message. God is the only one who can make hearts change…I cannot. As a matter of fact, just because my notoriety may increase, it does not mean that God’s will is being done.
My prayer today is that God will hide me behind the Cross. That all that I do points toward eternal significance and not temporal. May I not get caught up in my personal significance and lose sight of of God’s kingdom.
