MLK Day

I realize that we have very far to go in our society in terms of race relations. But having said that, it amazes me how far we have come in just one generation of time in terms of attitudes toward one another. I can’t help but think that by the time my children are 40 what progress might have been made. Having grown up in a town and school system that had a healthly diversity among Latinos, African Americans and whites, we were forced in a way to figure out how best to live in harmony. We were all exposed to a bit of culture shock in terms of music, family systems, and even religious leanings as we grew to know one another. Diversity was good. It made for a richer context in which to live and has made me a more loving and concerned person later in life.
