Beginning with Jesus

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

John 1:1-5 NRSV

We have become satisfied, even enamored, may be best to say duped, with building our lives with the material of this world (self-sufficiency, comparability, false sense of inevitable progress, our own authority) instead of the material of eternity which is faith, hope and love.

We want the kingdom without the king.

Mark Sayers from Disappearing Church

When you begin with Jesus you always get the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

What can you expect when you begin with Jesus?

1) A relationship. Through him…(John 1:3,John 1:7,John 1:10)

2) A host of witnesses to reveal the truth and help keep you on the path.

3) To be misunderstood even by those who you think should know better.

4) Light for your path.

5) Victory. Assurance that whatever today holds you are in the grasp of the One who holds today.

When you begin with anything other than Jesus you climb on a treadmill to nowhere, filled with lies to make you temporarily feel better, and then eventual despair.

How you begin determines where you end.

The hope we all have is that the God we serve is always ready for a new beginning.

Today is what matters.

Begin with Jesus.

I'm one of the pastors at First United Methodist Church in Lexington, Kentucky where I've served for the past thirteen years. The sub-title of this blog is "Grace is no accident" which happens to be the defining reality of my life. God's grace (gift) is the reason we have breath in our lungs and hope in our hearts.
